Project Progress
Construction on the €400 million investment by Evonik in Germany is advancing well. The first plant of the new polyamide 12 complex was completed on schedule in mid-October and is currently being commissioned. Additional plants are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2021, with full project completion anticipated in the first half of 2021.
Challenges and Solutions
Marcus von Twistern, the project lead, highlighted the team's effective handling of challenges posed by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, including interrupted supply chains and entry restrictions for assembly personnel. Despite these issues, solutions were found, and no major delays are expected. Concrete and steel structures are finished, most units are delivered and installed, and piping and electrical installations are ongoing. The future operating team has also begun training on new work processes.
Capacity Increase
The new plants at the Marl Chemical Park in North Rhine-Westphalia will increase Evonik's polyamide 12 capacity by more than 50%. This expansion supports strategic growth in special applications, with polyamide 12 being crucial for markets such as automotive engineering, gas piping, sports, and 3D printing.
