- Evonik's new polyamide 12 complex in Marl is a €400 million investment.
- The project will increase PA 12 capacity by over 50%.
- Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony attended by key figures.
- Startup is scheduled for 2021.
Project Overview
Evonik has commenced construction on its largest investment in Germany, a new polyamide 12 (PA 12) complex in Marl Chemical Park. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Armin Laschet, the minister president of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Christian Kullmann, chairman of Evonik's executive board, along with over 200 participants.
Investment and Capacity
The €400 million project will expand PA 12 production capacity by more than 50% at Evonik's largest site globally. The new complex will include additional plants for both the polymer and its precursors, with startup scheduled for 2021.
Strategic Importance
Armin Laschet emphasized the significance of this investment for the northern Ruhr region, highlighting North Rhine-Westphalia's status as Germany's leading chemical location. Christian Kullmann noted that the new plant will support growth in strategic markets such as 3D printing and the automotive industry, where PA 12's lightweight and durable properties are highly valued.
Technological Advancements
Claus Rettig, chairman of Evonik Resource Efficiency GmbH, introduced digitalization projects and startups focused on developing new, customized polymers. He stressed the importance of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance flexibility and speed in product development.
Market Applications
Evonik has been a leading producer of high-performance polymers for over 50 years, with PA 12 marketed under the VESTAMID® Granulate brand. The material is in high demand in sectors such as automotive, oil and gas, medicine, and athletics. Additionally, the powdered version, VESTOSINT®, is used in metal coatings and 3D printing for industrial-scale production of high-tech components.
