Project overview

Technip Energies awarded Emerson a contract to provide automation technologies for SkyNRG’s sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant under construction in Delfzijl, Netherlands. The greenfield facility is described as the first dedicated SAF production plant in Europe and is expected to produce approximately 100,000 tonnes of SAF annually once fully operational in 2028.

Automation scope

Emerson will deliver a DeltaV integrated control and safety system (ICSS), comprising the DeltaV Distributed Control System and DeltaV Safety Instrumented System, plus AMS Device Manager for plant asset management. DeltaV Electronic Marshalling with distributed CHARMs will be used to reduce field wiring costs and accommodate late-stage design changes.

Process and assets

The plant will convert residual fats and greases using a hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids process, include an advanced feedstock pre-treatment unit, and house an on-site hydrogen plant based on Technip Energies’ proprietary high-efficiency steam methane reforming technology to support stable, consistent operation and throughput optimization.

Regulatory context and delivery aims

The facility will support the Netherlands in meeting the EU ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which requires a minimum 2% SAF in jet fuel from 2025 rising to 70% by 2050. Emerson frames the born-digital automation architecture and end-to-end project services as measures to simplify commissioning, reduce project risk and enable safe start-up and long-term operational performance.
