SkyNRG and KLM start construction of Netherlands' first dedicated SAF plant

Key highlights
  • SkyNRG begins construction of DSL-01, the Netherlands' first dedicated SAF plant with KLM as primary off‑taker.
  • Facility targeted to produce ~100,000 tonnes/year of SAF by 2028 via the HEFA pathway from used cooking oil and residual fats and greases.
  • Project secured non‑recourse project financing and received a €16 million Just Transition Fund subsidy from the Northern Netherlands Alliance.
  • DSL-01 will generate renewable co‑products (propane, butane, naphtha) and create more than 100 direct jobs.

Project overview

DSL-01 is the Netherlands’ first facility fully dedicated to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), developed by SkyNRG in Delfzijl, with KLM as the primary long‑term off‑taker enabling the project’s financing.

Financing and public support

The plant is the first commercial‑scale SAF project to secure non‑recourse project financing and received a €16 million subsidy from the European Just Transition Fund via the Northern Netherlands Alliance.

Capacity, pathway and feedstocks

Once operational in 2028 the facility is targeted to produce about 100,000 tonnes/year of SAF using the HEFA (Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids) pathway from low‑quality feedstocks such as used cooking oil and residual fats and greases, while also yielding renewable co‑products including propane, butane and naphtha.

Regional impact

DSL‑01 is expected to create more than 100 direct jobs and reinforce the northern Netherlands as a hub for sustainable industry and energy transition, supporting economic diversification after the end of gas extraction in Groningen.

Sector implications

The project is presented as a commercially scalable blueprint for moving SAF from pilots to industrial scale and underscores the need for continued investment, policy support and collaboration across governments, industry and airlines to expand SAF capacity.
