Iberdrola's Ekienea Solar Plant Approved for Construction in Spain

Project Overview

The Ekienea solar plant, led by Iberdrola España, has received Prior Administrative Authorization from Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. This approval marks a significant step towards its planned commissioning in 2027.

Investment and Partnerships

The project represents a €90 million investment and is a collaborative effort involving Iberdrola España (75%), the Basque Energy Agency (18%), Krean (5%), and the Provincial Council of Álava (2%).

Energy Production and Environmental Impact

Once operational, the plant will be the largest photovoltaic facility in the Basque Country, producing approximately 155 GWh annually. This output is equivalent to the energy consumption of about 45,000 homes and will reduce CO₂ emissions by around 15,500 tons each year.

Economic and Employment Benefits

The construction phase is expected to create up to 300 jobs, contributing to the local economy. The project also includes initiatives to ensure coexistence with local biodiversity.
