Shutdown Decision

In autumn 2014, Dong's management decided to shut down the Inbicon facility in Kalundborg by 2015. This decision impacted the second planned demonstration campaign, which was supposed to showcase Terranol’s semi-continuous fermentation protocol with replenishment.

Process Relocation

Due to the shutdown, the demonstration campaign was relocated to the Inbicon GMO approved pilot plant in Skærbæk. The process involved transferring 75% of the fermentation broth to an empty tank after the first fed batch period, where fermentation was completed. The filling then continued from 25% to 100% in the first tank without adding new yeast.

Results

The relocated demonstration used the Terranol yeast strain, cV-110, and achieved an excellent yield of 93% in the refill test at the 300L pilot scale.

Conference Presentation

Both Inbicon and Terranol were invited to present their joint results at the 37th Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals, held in San Diego, USA, from April 27-30, 2015. This event provided an excellent opportunity to share their findings with a broader audience.
