Greensand Future

About Project Greensand

Greensand Future, commonly known as Project Greensand, is a Danish carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative developing a full value chain to transport, inject, and permanently store CO2 in depleted oil and gas reservoirs in the Danish North Sea. The project is led by INEOS Energy with industry and research partners, including Wintershall Dea, and is designed to enable large‑scale, commercial CCS in support of national and EU climate targets.

Project Greensand integrates onshore CO2 reception and interim storage with offshore transport and injection via repurposed North Sea infrastructure in the Siri area (e.g., the Nini fields). Its scope covers subsurface characterization, permitting, liquefaction and logistics, injection operations, and continuous monitoring and verification to ensure safe, permanent containment. Having progressed from pilot injections toward commercial operations, the project provides infrastructure to help hard‑to‑abate industries—such as chemicals, refining, cement, and waste-to-energy—decarbonize through cross‑border CO2 transport and long‑term geological storage.
