VIDA bioenergy’s Wormslade biogas facility has successfully injected biomethane into the UK gas grid and moved into commercial operations, allowing the plant to begin supplying renewable biomethane to local energy networks.
Capacity and outputs
The facility is designed to process approximately 46,000 tonnes of feedstock each year and produce around 68 GWh of renewable biomethane annually — stated as sufficient to heat more than 5,000 homes. It will also produce about 70,000 tonnes of nutrient-rich digestate per year for use as organic fertiliser in agriculture.
Timeline and next steps
VIDA will ramp up biomethane production toward full operating capacity and complete commissioning of remaining auxiliary systems before final performance testing and handover to operations. Full capacity is expected by October 2026.
Strategic context
Wormslade is VIDA’s fourth operational biogas facility and fits the company’s wider strategy to expand renewable gas production across Europe. Cadent noted the potential for significant growth in UK biomethane, targeting a five-fold increase in production over the next decade.
