VIDA bioenergy Bernheze plant begins biomethane production

Key highlights
  • First gas injection occurred on 28 April.
  • Facility is ramping to a full capacity of 8 million cubic metres of biomethane per year.
  • Designed to process approximately 72,000 tonnes of agricultural feedstock annually.
  • Generates about 14,000 tonnes of digestate annually, returned to agriculture as organic fertiliser.

Start-up and production

The Bernheze biomethane facility has commenced operations and begun injecting renewable biomethane into the Dutch gas grid, with its first gas injection recorded on 28 April. Commissioning is proceeding with a ramp-up toward the plant's full production capacity of 8 million cubic metres of biomethane per year.

Capacity and feedstock

The plant is designed to process approximately 72,000 tonnes of agricultural feedstock each year. Conversion uses anaerobic digestion and upgrading technologies to yield biomethane and a nutrient-rich digestate stream.

Environmental and circular benefits

Output includes around 14,000 tonnes of digestate annually, which is returned to the agricultural sector as an organic fertiliser. The facility is positioned to support greenhouse gas reduction, strengthen domestic renewable gas supply and promote nutrient recycling within a more circular agricultural economy.

Operations and partners

Bernheze is VIDA bioenergy's second operational plant in the Netherlands and the third operating site in its portfolio. The project delivery involved employees, contractors, partners, local authorities and farmers across development and start-up phases.
