Technology selection and configuration

SLB Capturi was selected as the preferred technology licensor for Uniper’s Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power project after a competitive front-end engineering and design process that began in December 2024. The facility would use SLB Capturi’s Big Catch amine-based capture system, configured to support flexible gas-turbine operation and to respond to changing electricity demand and variable renewable generation. The design incorporates anti-mist and energy saver systems and draws on solvents and process developments carried out since 2008.

Project scope and capacity

The plant would be built on land next to Uniper’s existing power station and could deliver up to 1.38 GW of low-carbon power in two phases. Following completion of phase one, the project could supply electricity equivalent to around 1.1 million homes a year. If approved, it would be SLB Capturi’s first mega-scale deployment for gas-fired power, complementing its experience in cement, waste-to-energy and bioenergy projects.

CO2 transport and storage

Captured carbon dioxide would be transported to nearby pipeline infrastructure being developed as part of the HyNet industrial cluster and permanently stored in repurposed depleted gas fields offshore to support emissions reductions across northwest England and North Wales.

Next steps and timeline

The project is progressing through the development consent process toward a final investment decision and EPC contracts. A decision on the Development Consent Order application is expected in the coming months, and the first phase could potentially be operational from 2030.
