Consortium Formation
A UK-based consortium, led by Exactmer with support from GSK, has been awarded over £7 million in funding from Innovate UK and the Department of Health and Social Care. The initiative is part of the Sustainable Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Programme (SMMIP).
Project Goals
The 36-month project aims to advance the production of high-purity bio-based solvents for medicines manufacturing. It seeks to reduce emissions linked to solvent use, targeting a 60% reduction in lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional solvents.
Technological Innovation
The consortium will employ advanced membrane purification technologies to produce cost-effective, low-greenhouse gas bio-based solvents. This approach allows manufacturers to adopt these alternatives without major changes to existing infrastructure or processes.
Industry Collaboration
The project brings together technology providers, manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies, including ERM, Ayming, Queen Mary University London, Atmospheric AI, SOLVE Chemistry, OXCCU, Celtic Renewables, University of Leeds, GSK, Croda, Cytiva, and CPI. The collaboration aims to validate bio-based solvents in existing medicines manufacturing and establish a supply chain for pharmaceutical-grade solvents.
