Project Overview

Topsoe has signed an agreement with Tangshan Jinlihai to provide technology and services for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Caofeidian Petrochemical Industry Base in Tangshan, Hebei province. The project aims to leverage Topsoe's Hydroflex® technology to convert waste oil into SAF, contributing to China's "dual carbon" strategy.

Timeline and Investment

Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026, with operations expected to start in the second half of 2028. The project involves a planned investment of approximately USD 210 million.

Environmental Impact

Once operational, the project is expected to enable an annual emission avoidance of around 700,000 metric tons of CO2e. This reduction is equivalent to the emissions from approximately two million passengers flying from Beijing to Copenhagen.

Industry Context

The agreement addresses the growing global demand for SAF, with the International Air Transport Association projecting SAF production to more than double by 2025. The International Energy Agency's Net Zero Scenario suggests that over 10% of aviation fuel consumption needs to be SAF by 2030 to stay on track for net zero by 2050.
