The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the global trade association for airlines, representing hundreds of carriers responsible for the majority of international air traffic. It develops and maintains industry standards that underpin safe, secure, and efficient air transport, including operational safety audits (IOSA), airline and airport coding (two-letter airline and three-letter airport codes), and commercial processes such as ticketing and settlement systems.
IATA also publishes authoritative regulations for the transport of dangerous goods and other specialized cargo, shaping how chemicals, batteries, and related materials move by air. The association advocates on policy and sustainability, coordinating with governments, fuel producers, and technology providers to advance sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and broader decarbonization pathways toward net-zero emissions by 2050. Through standard-setting, data, and industry coordination, IATA connects aviation with energy and chemical supply chains to improve safety, compliance, and the scaling of low-carbon fuels.
