Topsoe to Provide SAF Technology for Zhejiang Jianglan Project

Key highlights
  • The SAF plant in Zhoushan City will produce 300,000 tons annually starting December 2026.
  • Construction begins in September 2025.
  • Topsoe's HydroFlex technology will be used for SAF production.
  • The project initially targets European markets, later expanding to China.

Project Overview

Topsoe has been selected by Zhejiang Jianglan Bio-Energy Technology Co. Ltd to provide technology and services for a Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) production facility in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang, China. The plant will utilize Topsoe’s HydroFlex® technology, licensing, technical expertise, and proprietary catalysts.

Production and Timeline

The facility is expected to start construction in September 2025, with operations commencing in December 2026. Once fully operational, it will produce 300,000 tons of SAF annually, initially supplying European markets with plans to expand to China's local market.

Environmental Impact

Topsoe’s technology is projected to enable an annual emission avoidance of approximately 698,000 tons of CO2e, equivalent to the emissions from about two million passengers flying from Beijing to Copenhagen.

Industry Context

This agreement addresses the growing global demand for SAF. The International Air Transport Association projects that SAF production will more than double in 2025 compared to 2024, reaching 2.1 million tons, or 0.7% of total global jet fuel production. To stay on track for net zero by 2050, the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero Scenario suggests that over 10% of fuel consumption in aviation needs to be SAF by 2030.
