Project Overview

Topsoe has been selected to provide its Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) technology for Carbon Neutral Fuels' e-SAF project, known as Project Starling, located in Workington, UK. The project will utilize 120MW of green power to produce sustainable aviation fuel.

Production and Timeline

The plant is designed to produce 25,000 metric tons of e-SAF annually. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with operations expected to commence by 2031, contingent on the final investment decision.

Funding and Significance

Project Starling received the largest award from the UK Government's third Advanced Fuels Fund in July 2025, aligning with the UK's SAF Mandate. This highlights the project's significance in advancing sustainable fuel initiatives.

Technology and Agreements

Topsoe has entered into a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) agreement with Carbon Neutral Fuels, marking the first commercial application of its SOEC technology for sustainable aviation fuel production.
