Stena Recycling has inaugurated its first industrial recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries in Halmstad, Sweden, with an investment of 250 million SEK. This facility is one of the first of its kind in Europe.
Recycling Capacity and Process
The advanced recycling process at the new plant allows for the recycling of 95% of an electric vehicle battery. The facility has an initial yearly recycling capacity of 10,000 tons and will handle battery material collected and pre-treated in Stena Recycling’s facilities across Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Finland, Norway, Germany, and Italy.
Future Expansion
Stena Recycling is prepared to scale up its battery recycling capacity as the market grows. Within the next ten years, the company expects to handle at least five to ten times the current volume.
Funding and Support
In 2021, Stena Recycling received SEK 70.7 million in funding from the Swedish Energy Agency to support the construction of the new facility.
