EEW and Stavenhagen inaugurate district heating using sewage‑sludge residual heat

Key highlights
  • Residual heat from thermal treatment of sewage sludge will feed Stavenhagen’s district heating network.
  • Project partners include EEW Energy from Waste Stavenhagen, Wärmeversorgung Stavenhagen (WVS) and the town authority.
  • Technical milestones: two heating condensers installed, pump house connected to power, pipeline and automation integrated; plant moved to regular operation.
  • Sewage sludge use supplies climate-friendly heat and supports future phosphorus recycling as part of a circular‑economy approach.

Project overview

EEW Energy from Waste Stavenhagen GmbH & Co. KG, the town of Stavenhagen and Wärmeversorgung Stavenhagen GmbH have commissioned a district heating extraction system that feeds residual heat from the thermal treatment of sewage sludge into the municipal network. Sewage sludge, being almost entirely biogenic, will provide climate-friendly heat to households and public institutions.

Policy and local response

Regional officials and project partners attended the opening, including Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania’s Environment Minister Dr Till Backhaus. The project was presented as an example of the circular economy: using sewage sludge both as an energy source and as feedstock for planned phosphorus recycling, while delivering a direct benefit to residents.

Partnership and regional impact

Local leaders highlighted the project’s role in strengthening Stavenhagen’s independent heat supply, creating long-term prospects for residents and supporting municipal climate targets. EEW and the municipal heating supplier say close cooperation enabled delivery and they plan further expansion of the district heating network.

Construction to operation

Recent technical milestones include installation of two heating condensers, connection of the pump house to the electricity supply, and full integration of pipeline connections and automation. With technical commissioning complete, the plant has been transitioned from construction into regular operation. Stavenhagen follows Premnitz as EEW’s second completed district heating project, with Großräschen nearing implementation.
