Contracts awarded

Stamicarbon, the nitrogen technology licensor of NEXTCHEM (MAIRE Group), was awarded the Process Design Package (PDP) and licensing for an integrated urea and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) plant being developed by Genesis Fertilizers, a farmer‑owned consortium, at Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan. The licensing component is subject to the client's Final Investment Decision.

Technology and plant capacities

The plant will use Stamicarbon's NX STAMI™ Urea portfolio, including its Adiabatic Flash urea melt technology, intended to reduce process steam consumption and improve reliability. Urea melt capacity is planned at 2,500 metric tons per day (MTPD). The site will also include a DEF facility sized at 1,500 MTPD; Stamicarbon's NX STAMI Specialties DEF design enables direct production of ISO 22241‑compliant DEF from aqueous urea solution, eliminating finishing and blending.

Low‑carbon feature

A carbon capture and sequestration unit is included in the project scope, which the parties say will make the facility the first proposed low‑carbon nitrogen fertilizer plant in Canada.

Equipment supply to Nutrien

Separately, Stamicarbon will supply a proprietary replacement High‑Pressure Urea Stripper to Nutrien's Fort Saskatchewan Nitrogen Operations in Alberta, a unit engineered to improve operational efficiency, reduce downtime and enhance long‑term reliability. The urea/DEF plant is expected to begin operations by 2029.
