SONATRACH and Eni sign protocol to cut oil and gas emissions in Algeria

Key highlights
  • Letter of intent signed 17 August 2026 to pursue decarbonisation and greenhouse gas (including methane) reduction initiatives in Algeria.
  • Protocol expands the 2023 MoU that targeted gas flaring reduction and the development of emission‑reduction technologies.
  • A joint LDAR campaign produced a significant reduction in fugitive emissions; LDAR measurement campaigns are now conducted independently and systematically at the joint ventures.
  • Baseline emissions assessment completed at six facilities; protocol includes exploring CCUS opportunities and a forestry project for natural CO₂ capture.

Scope of the protocol

SONATRACH and Eni signed a letter of intent on 17 August 2026 to identify and promote prospects and initiatives for the decarbonation of the oil and gas sector and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, in Algeria, drawing on international best practices.

Builds on 2023 MoU

The protocol expands work begun under the 2023 Memorandum of Intent, which focused on technological cooperation to reduce and use gas flaring and to develop emission‑reduction technologies. Energy audits and joint analyses under the MoU identified mutually beneficial opportunities and specific measures for implementation.

Implemented actions and outcomes

A structured programme of joint activities — technical analyses, capacity building and site visits — identified opportunities in fugitive emissions and venting reduction, energy efficiency, flaring reduction and assessment of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) opportunities. Targeted training supported immediate on‑site implementation of measures.

A leak detection and repair (LDAR) campaign executed under the MoU led to a significant reduction in fugitive emissions; LDAR measurement campaigns are now conducted independently and systematically at SONATRACH–Eni joint ventures. A baseline emissions assessment was completed at six facilities operated by the partners.

Next steps

The new protocol will continue the 2023 workstream and explore new areas for greenhouse gas emission reduction, including advancing natural CO₂ capture initiatives through a forestry project and further assessing CCUS opportunities.
