RWE and Amazon Sign PPA for Nordseecluster B Offshore Wind Power

Key highlights
  • The PPA involves 110 MW from Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm.
  • Nordseecluster B is scheduled for commercial operation in 2029.
  • The project is a joint venture between RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%).
  • Amazon aims for net-zero carbon by 2040 with this agreement.

Power Purchase Agreement Details

Amazon and RWE have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 110 megawatts (MW) from the Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm in Germany. This agreement is part of a larger Strategic Framework Agreement established in June 2025, where RWE supports Amazon's carbon-free energy goals, and Amazon Web Services aids RWE's digital transformation.

Project Location and Phases

The Nordseecluster offshore wind farm is situated in the German North Sea, approximately 50 kilometers north of Juist. The project is divided into two phases: Nordseecluster A, with a capacity of 660 MW, is under construction and expected to be operational by early 2027. Nordseecluster B will add 900 MW, with commercial operations slated for 2029.

Joint Venture and Impact

The wind farm is a joint venture between RWE, holding 51%, and Norges Bank Investment Management, holding 49%. The project aims to contribute to Germany's decarbonization efforts by providing reliable, carbon-free electricity to the grid.

Amazon's Renewable Energy Goals

This PPA supports Amazon's objective to achieve net-zero carbon across its operations by 2040. In Germany, Amazon has six onsite solar projects and this is their fourth large-scale offshore wind PPA in the country. Combined, these projects have a capacity exceeding 790 MW, expected to power over 1,000,000 German homes annually.

Global Collaboration

Globally, Amazon has contracted over 1 GW of renewable capacity across various RWE projects. This PPA marks the first collaboration between Amazon and RWE outside the United States.
