ArcelorMittal and AWS to industrialise AI and supply low‑carbon steel

Key highlights
  • ArcelorMittal has entered a strategic collaboration with AWS to accelerate industrial automation across its global operations.
  • ArcelorMittal will converge portions of OT and IT on AWS infrastructure and deploy AI at the edge for predictive maintenance, computer‑vision quality control, process optimisation and digital twins.
  • AWS will design and deliver a comprehensive education programme to advance digital and AI adoption across ArcelorMittal’s global workforce.
  • Amazon signed a multi‑year Supply Framework Agreement with ArcelorMittal for lower‑carbon XCarb® structural steel for Europe and the UK to support Amazon’s net‑zero by 2040 goal.

Scope of collaboration

ArcelorMittal and AWS will collaborate to accelerate industrial automation across ArcelorMittal’s global operations by bringing AWS cloud, AI and edge technologies to production environments. The partnership includes converging portions of ArcelorMittal’s operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) on AWS infrastructure designed for security and scale.

Technologies and use cases

The companies will use AWS services across industrial IoT, real‑time sensor data and machine learning to deploy AI at the point of production. Targeted use cases include predictive maintenance, computer‑vision quality control, process optimisation and digital twins of assets and production lines, aiming to improve safety, asset reliability and energy efficiency across sites, including steelmaking sites in 14 countries.

Workforce training

AWS will design and deliver a comprehensive education programme to support ArcelorMittal’s global workforce in adopting digital and AI technologies at scale.

Steel supply agreement

Separately, Amazon has entered a multi‑year Supply Framework Agreement with ArcelorMittal for structural steel across Europe and the United Kingdom. Under the framework, ArcelorMittal will supply lower‑carbon XCarb® steel for Amazon operations and AWS data centres to support Amazon’s goal to reach net‑zero carbon by 2040.
