Rompetrol Rafinare to install 9.4 MW PV plant at Petromidia refinery
- Photovoltaic plant of 9.4 MW to be built at the Petromidia refinery, generating over 9,800 MWh annually for on-site use.
- Estimated annual greenhouse gas reduction of 6,024 tonnes of CO₂ from the PV project.
- Total project value about 44 million lei, including ~14 million lei non‑refundable financing from the Modernization Fund and ~30 million lei from Rompetrol Rafinare.
- Implementation scheduled by December 31, 2028; project is part of KMG International (Rompetrol) Group’s decarbonization strategy.
Project overview
Rompetrol Rafinare will develop a 9.4 MW photovoltaic plant at the Petromidia refinery, expected to produce more than 9,800 MWh of renewable electricity annually. All generated power is intended for the refinery’s internal consumption, increasing the share of renewables in site operations and lowering associated carbon emissions.
Funding and timeline
The project’s total value is approximately 44 million lei, comprising about 14 million lei in non‑refundable financing from the Modernization Fund and a 30‑million‑lei contribution from Rompetrol Rafinare. Implementation is scheduled by December 31, 2028, in line with the funding call deadline.
Integration with site energy projects
The PV installation complements recent investments at Petromidia, notably a new cogeneration plant with ~80 MW installed capacity that entered commercial operation at the end of 2025 and now meets the refinery’s electricity and process steam needs. These measures aim to optimise energy consumption and increase operational efficiency.
Operational results and related projects
Petromidia reported a refining capacity utilisation rate of 98.11% in the first half of the year, a white product yield of 86.54% and an Energy Intensity Index (EII) of 92 points, 0.4 points lower than the same period last year. Rompetrol Rafinare also announced a 4.8 MW photovoltaic project with ~9 MWh storage at the Vega Ploieşti refinery, forecast to generate over 6,200 MWh annually—around two‑thirds of Vega’s yearly electricity needs. The Petromidia refinery is the KMG International Group’s main asset and a key regional fuel supplier.
