Rompetrol Rafinare modernises storage at Petromidia refinery
- Modernisation program continues in 2026 and targets capital rehabilitation of five tanks at Petromidia refinery.
- Overall storage capacity will increase by 20%; key upgrades include distillate 5,000→6,000 m³, gasoline 5,000→6,000 m³, two tanks 10,000→12,000 m³, and a 57,000 m³ crude tank under modernisation.
- Projects use hydraulic jacks to build from the roof/upper shell, reducing work‑at‑height risks and accelerating execution.
- Each project mobilises about 100 specialists; in H1 2026 Petromidia processed ~2.6 million tons of raw materials and produced ~2.1 million tons of fuels, with ~70% directed to the domestic market.
Project scope
Rompetrol Rafinare continues in 2026 a multi‑annual programme to modernise storage infrastructure at the Petromidia refinery through capital rehabilitation and upgrades of five tanks to strengthen operational flexibility, safety and performance.
Tank upgrades and capacity
One distillate tank was rebuilt and increased from 5,000 m³ to 6,000 m³. A gasoline tank will be expanded from 5,000 m³ to 6,000 m³, two tanks used for diesel and components will grow from 10,000 m³ to 12,000 m³, and a 57,000 m³ crude oil tank is under modernisation. The programme will deliver roughly a 20% increase in storage capacity for raw materials and petroleum products.
Construction method and workforce
Projects employ hydraulic jacks to construct tanks starting from the roof and upper shell, which reduces risks associated with working at height and speeds execution. Each project requires mobilisation of about 100 specialists — designers, engineers, execution teams, refinery personnel and subcontractors from experienced firms.
Operational context
Since 2007 over 60 storage tanks have been rehabilitated across the Petromidia Năvodari and Vega Ploieşti refineries. In H1 2026 Petromidia processed almost 2.6 million tons of raw materials, producing about 2.1 million tons of fuels with almost 70% supplied to the domestic market; Vega processed almost 164,000 tons and reported a record bitumen output of 48.7 thousand tons.
