Key highlights
  • Evos Rotterdam expands with 5 tanks for 67,500 m³ of (bio)methanol and (bio)ethanol.
  • A new inland shipping berth is needed for increased transhipment.
  • The quay, including shore power, will be ready by Q1 2028.
  • Bio-methanol bunkering in Rotterdam rose from 3,900 to nearly 12,000 tons in 2025.

Expansion Details

Evos Rotterdam is expanding its Europoort terminal with five new storage tanks, adding a total capacity of 67,500 m³ for (bio)methanol and (bio)ethanol. This expansion requires an additional inland shipping berth to accommodate increased transhipment activities.

Infrastructure Development

The Port of Rotterdam Authority will construct a new quay, equipped with shore power, to support this growth. The quay is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2028, enabling Evos to meet the rising demand for storage and bunkering of (bio)methanol.

Strategic Importance

Methanol and ethanol are crucial in the transition to sustainable energy and raw materials, serving as industrial feedstock and eco-friendly shipping fuels. This expansion reinforces Rotterdam's status as a key hub for these substances.

Environmental Impact

Bio-methanol, with lower NOx and SOx emissions, aligns with Europe's goals for cleaner production and transport. In 2025, the port of Rotterdam saw bio-methanol bunkering increase from 3,900 to nearly 12,000 tons, highlighting its growing role in sustainable maritime fuel.
