Biomethanol Plant Development
Perpetual Next has secured a 60,000 square meter plot in Moerdijk for a biomethanol plant, following a competitive land allocation process. This site is part of their strategy to achieve a 660,000-ton annual biomethanol production capacity in the EU. A similar site in Delfzijl was allocated earlier this year.
Market Demand and Strategy
The global biomethanol market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate of 44.5% from 2025 to 2032. By 2030, approximately 186 container ships are expected to use methanol as their primary fuel, each consuming about 65,000 tons annually. To meet this demand, 50 to 60 production sites are needed worldwide.
Financing and Expansion
Rabobank has provided financing for expanding the existing Moerdijk site, currently producing biogas, to upgrade it to green gas production. Earlier this year, a 30 million euro subsidy was granted for this expansion, enabling the development to be completed within the year.
