ORLEN secures up to a quarter of crude with Equinor from Johan Sverdrup

Key highlights
  • Three-year crude supply agreement signed with Equinor for oil from the Johan Sverdrup field.
  • Deliveries start in September and may reach over 9 million tonnes per year.
  • Annual volumes can range from nearly 5 million tonnes to over 9 million tonnes, covering up to one-quarter of ORLEN Group’s crude demand.
  • Johan Sverdrup accounts for about one-third of Norway’s oil output and production there uses shore power to cut CO2 emissions.

Agreement and scope

ORLEN has signed a three-year contract with Equinor for crude oil from the Johan Sverdrup field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Deliveries will begin in September and will be routed to refineries in Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, strengthening regional supply security.

Volumes and flexibility

The contract provides flexibility: annual deliveries may range from nearly 5 million tonnes to over 9 million tonnes, which could represent up to one-quarter of the ORLEN Group’s annual crude demand. The structure allows adjustment of volumes to market conditions and refinery operational needs.

Crude grade and emissions

Supplies will be based on the Johan Sverdrup crude grade, from one of the world’s largest fields that supplies about one-third of Norway’s crude. Production at Johan Sverdrup is carried out with reduced CO2 emissions because platforms are powered from shore, mainly with renewable-sourced electricity. The agreement also permits supply of other Norwegian Continental Shelf crude grades.

Strategic rationale

The deal builds on existing cooperation between the two companies, which already covers production activities, low-carbon projects and natural gas supplies to Poland. ORLEN frames the contract as part of a strategy to diversify sources, enhance operational stability and increase resilience amid global market volatility and geopolitical risks to transport routes.
