OMV Petrom advances Gabare solar-plus-storage into development

Key highlights
  • Final investment decision taken for Gabare, one of Bulgaria’s largest integrated solar-plus-storage projects.
  • Photovoltaic capacity about 415 MWp with battery storage capacity around 600 MWh.
  • Estimated investments of about EUR 300 million, including roughly EUR 100 million for the storage component.
  • Project is ready-to-build with construction to start after contract signing and first production expected in 2028.

Project scope

OMV Petrom has taken the final investment decision for the Gabare project in the Byala Slatina region, described as one of the largest integrated solar energy and battery storage projects in Bulgaria. The development includes a photovoltaic plant of about 415 MWp and a battery energy storage system with approximately 600 MWh capacity.

Finance and ownership

Development requires estimated investments of around EUR 300 million, with about EUR 100 million earmarked for the energy storage component. The project will be developed through Dunav Solar Plant OOD, a company owned 50% by OMV Petrom and 50% by Enery, and will be financed from the partners' sources and external funding.

Schedule, permits and offtake

Gabare already holds the necessary permits and is in a ready-to-build stage; construction will commence after the construction contract is signed. First production is estimated for 2028. A power purchase agreement secures that OMV Petrom will acquire 50% of the future solar park production.
