RWE approved for Nordseecluster B offshore wind farm

Key highlights
  • BSH granted planning permission for Nordseecluster B (NC3+NC4), enabling construction of 900 MW with commercial operation targeted for early 2029.
  • Nordseecluster A (660 MW) is under construction, foundations installed and full grid connection scheduled by early 2027.
  • Combined Nordseecluster capacity will be 1.6 GW, expected to produce about 6.5 TWh of electricity annually.
  • Ownership: RWE 51% (construction and operation) and Norges Bank Investment Management 49%; RWE has a 110 MW PPA with Amazon from Nordseecluster B.

Approval and scope

The German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) granted planning permission for Nordseecluster B (NC3+NC4), adding 900 MW to the Nordseecluster to reach a combined capacity of 1.6 GW; the site lies ~46 km north of Borkum and ~50 km north of Juist.

Progress and schedule

Nordseecluster A (660 MW) is under construction with all foundations installed and setup of 44 turbines due to begin this summer; A is scheduled for full grid connection by early 2027. For Nordseecluster B, some component production has started, foundation installation is scheduled to start next year, turbine installation (60 units) is planned for 2028, and commercial operations are targeted for early 2029.

Generation and offtake

Combined output from the cluster is expected to be about 6.5 TWh per year; RWE has a 110 MW power purchase agreement for Nordseecluster B with Amazon and intends to supply industrial customers with the project’s electricity.

Ownership and delivery

Nordseecluster is owned 51% by RWE and 49% by Norges Bank Investment Management, with RWE responsible for construction and operation throughout the project life cycle.
