- The ReSolute project will build a plant to produce 1,000 tonnes of Cyrene™ annually from renewable biomass.
- The project involves 12 partners from 6 countries.
- ReSolute builds on the previous Horizon 2020 project ReSolve.
- Traditional solvents like NMP, DMF, DMAc, and DCM are under regulatory pressure.
Project Overview
Biotechnology company Circa Group is leading the consortium for the EU project ReSolute, a Horizon 2020 initiative aimed at developing the first commercial plant to produce Cyrene™, a sustainable and safer alternative to traditional fossil-based solvents.
Production and Capacity
The project will build a flagship plant to create levoglucosenone (LGO), a chemical building block used to produce Cyrene™ in one step. The plant is expected to reach a production capacity of 1,000 tonnes of Cyrene™ per year, using feedstock from non-food renewable biomass.
Consortium and Partners
ReSolute brings together 12 partners from 6 countries, including Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Norske Skog, and the University of York. The project aims to provide new manufacturing and employment opportunities in Europe.
Regulatory Context
Traditional solvents such as NMP, DMF, DMAc, and DCM are under intense regulatory pressure but are still widely used. The ReSolute project supports the EU’s circular economy strategy by offering a bio-based alternative.
