Investment and Job Creation
IONWAY, a joint venture between Umicore and PowerCo, will build its first cathode active material (CAM) production plant in Nysa, Poland. The project will create 900 jobs and is backed by a €1.7 billion investment, with €350 million in grants from the Polish government under the Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework.
Production and Sustainability
The plant will run on renewable energy, aiming for carbon-neutral production. It will produce CAM, a critical component for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, contributing to the EU Green Deal by establishing regional, sustainable, and transparent battery supply chains.
Timeline and Capacity
Preparation, engineering, and permitting are ongoing, with construction set to start once permits are obtained. Production is expected to begin in 2025. The plant aims to scale up its annual production capacity to 160 GWh by the end of the decade, enough to power 2.2 million battery-electric vehicles.
Strategic Location
Nysa was chosen for its strategic location, access to renewable energy, and skilled workforce. The plant will benefit from proximity to Umicore’s existing CAM plant and refining operations in Finland, ensuring easy access to raw materials and expertise.
