Project Overview
The VNI West project aims to connect the states of Victoria and New South Wales in Australia through a 240km, 500kV double-circuit transmission line. This infrastructure is crucial for reinforcing the power grid and supporting Victoria's energy transition.
Timeline and Collaboration
The target completion date for the construction is set for 2030. Iberdrola, having won the tender, will work alongside government-owned VicGrid to design and develop the project. They will later submit a proposal to build, own, and operate the transmission line.
Capacity and Benefits
The project is expected to increase bidirectional transfer capacity by up to 3.5GW, unlocking renewable energy generation in both Victoria and New South Wales. It will also strengthen the Australian electricity grid, contributing to the country's decarbonization and energy security.
Development Phases
In the initial phase, Iberdrola will collaborate with VicGrid to define critical elements such as engineering design, financial and technical planning, and cost estimation. The company will also engage with local communities and support necessary authorizations related to the environment, cultural heritage, and regulations.
