- Iberdrola plans to invest over 3 billion euros in green hydrogen, with more than half allocated to Spain.
- The ACE Terminal in Rotterdam will be operational by 2026, handling green ammonia and hydrogen.
- Hynetwork Services aims to complete the Dutch national hydrogen network by 2030.
- Iberdrola's Puertollano plant will produce up to 3,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, avoiding 48,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
Green Hydrogen Corridor Development
Iberdrola has advanced the establishment of a green hydrogen maritime corridor between Spain and the Netherlands. Agreements were signed with ACE Terminal and Hynetwork Services, witnessed by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. The project aims to transport green ammonia to the Port of Rotterdam, convert it to green hydrogen, and distribute it to industrial users in northwestern Europe.
Significant Investments and Future Plans
Iberdrola plans to invest over 3 billion euros in the green hydrogen sector, with more than half of this investment directed to Spain. The Puertollano plant, currently in its first phase, aims to increase its capacity tenfold in the future. Additionally, Iberdrola has signed a contract to sell over 100,000 tons of ammonia annually from its Huelva plant.
Strategic Partnerships and Infrastructure
The ACE Terminal in Rotterdam, developed by Gasunie, HES International, and Vopak, will be operational by 2026. It will handle the reception, storage, and conversion of green ammonia to hydrogen. Hynetwork Services, a subsidiary of Gasunie, is creating a national hydrogen network in the Netherlands, expected to be completed by 2030, to link supply and demand for CO2-free hydrogen.
Decarbonizing Northern Europe
The agreements aim to decarbonize industries in northern Europe by providing a reliable supply of green hydrogen. The transport and distribution will target customers in the chemical, steel, refining, and fertilizer industries, particularly in industrial clusters in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Zeeland, and Chemelot.
Puertollano Plant Capabilities
Iberdrola's Puertollano plant in Ciudad Real includes a 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant, a 20 MWh lithium-ion battery system, and a 20 MW green hydrogen production system. With an investment of 150 million euros, the plant can produce up to 3,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, avoiding 48,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
