- RWE is investing €230 million in a 400 MW, 700 MWh battery storage facility in Gundremmingen.
- The facility will use the decommissioned nuclear plant's grid connection.
- Completion and commercial operation are planned for early 2028.
- The facility will include 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells.

Project Overview
RWE is constructing Germany's largest battery storage facility at the Gundremmingen energy site in Bavaria. The facility will have a power capacity of 400 megawatts and a storage capacity of 700 megawatt hours. It will utilize the existing grid connection of the decommissioned nuclear power plant.
Investment and Timeline
The project represents an investment of approximately €230 million. The battery storage facility is scheduled to begin commercial operation in early 2028.
Technical Details
The facility will house more than 200 containers containing around 850,000 lithium iron phosphate battery cells. It will feature state-of-the-art control technology and over 100 ultra-fast inverters, enabling it to supply or absorb electricity within milliseconds to stabilize the power grid.
Additional Developments
In addition to the battery storage facility, a 55-hectare solar park and a gas-fired power station are planned for the Gundremmingen site. These developments aim to maintain the site's role in Bavaria's energy supply.
