LyondellBasell has received its first partial permit for constructing a new pyrolysis plant in Wesseling, Germany. This approval, announced on August 19, is a crucial step in the project aimed at converting mixed plastic waste into new materials.

The foundation stone for the plant was laid in September 2024, with commissioning expected in 2026. The facility will utilize LyondellBasell's proprietary MoReTec technology to produce up to 30,000 metric tons of pyrolysis oil and gas annually. These products will serve as feedstock for new plastics, promoting a circular economy.

Supply Chain and Partnerships

Source One Plastics GmbH, a joint venture between 23 Oaks Investments and LyondellBasell, will supply the necessary plastic waste for the plant. This collaboration is integral to the facility's operation and its goal of recycling and waste reduction.

Regulatory and Construction Details

The approval process began with an application to the Cologne District Government on November 24, 2023. The recent partial permit allows for immediate earthworks and foundation work, including bored piles and precast foundations. The project is classified under the Federal Immission Control Act and adheres to the Industrial Emissions Directive (210/75/EU).
