KfW, Gasunie, and RWE to Build LNG Terminal in Brunsbüttel

At a glance
  • The LNG terminal will have an annual regasification capacity of 8 billion m3.
  • KfW will acquire 50% of the shares in the LNG terminal.
  • Gasunie will operate the facility.
  • The terminal will be refitted to process green hydrogen derivatives like ammonia.

Project Overview

The KfW, Gasunie, and RWE have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to build an LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany. The KfW will acquire 50% of the shares in the terminal for the Federal Government, while Gasunie will operate the facility.

Capacity and Impact

The terminal will have an annual regasification capacity of 8 billion m3, allowing Germany to import gas directly from regions not accessible by pipelines. This project aims to enhance Germany’s energy security and reduce north-western Europe’s dependence on pipeline gas imports.

Future Plans

There are plans to refit the terminal to process green hydrogen derivatives such as ammonia, aligning with future energy transition goals.

Statements from Officials

Minister Robert Habeck emphasized the need for a climate-neutral energy supply and reducing dependence on Russian gas, highlighting the terminal's role in boosting energy security and facilitating the transition to green hydrogen. Sigrid Kaag, Finance Minister of the Netherlands, noted that Gasunie’s involvement is a significant step towards enhancing Europe’s gas security.
