Equinor gas discovery at Gullfaks South
- Estimated recoverable volume 0.5–1.6 million standard cubic metres of oil equivalents (3.3–10.3 million barrels of oil equivalent).
- Well was drilled as a sidetrack during drilling of a production well by the rig Askeladden.
- Discovery lies within the Gullfaks production licence; licence owners are Equinor, Petoro and OMV.
- Exploration well is formally designated 34/10-D-4 BH.
Discovery
Equinor and its partners discovered gas at the Gullfaks South field, located 190 kilometres northwest of Bergen. The find was made by an exploration well drilled as a sidetrack in connection with the drilling of a production well.
Volumes
Estimated recoverable volumes are between 0.5 million and 1.6 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalents, corresponding to 3.3 to 10.3 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Operations
The sidetrack was drilled by the drilling rig Askeladden. Equinor’s vice president for the Gullfaks field, Gunnar Egge, said it is positive that discoveries of this size can be made with cost‑effective exploration wells and that these will be profitable barrels to help maintain activity and production on Gullfaks.
Licence and well
The discovery is within the Gullfaks production licence and therefore has the same owners as the field: Equinor, Petoro and OMV. The exploration well is formally named 34/10-D-4 BH.
