Galp Installs Final Modules at ZILS Green Hydrogen Plant

Key highlights
  • Galp completed installation of ten 10 MW electrolysis modules at Sines Refinery.
  • The plant will start operations in the second half of 2026.
  • It will produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.
  • The project will reduce CO₂ emissions by 110,000 tonnes.

Project Completion

Galp has finalized the installation of the last of ten 10 MW electrolysis modules at its new green hydrogen production unit at the Sines Refinery, located in ZILS – Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone.

Operational Timeline

The facility is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026, positioning it as the largest green hydrogen plant in Europe at that time.

Production Capacity and Impact

The unit will have the capacity to produce up to 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, replacing about 20% of the hydrogen currently used in the refinery's operations.

Environmental Benefits

By substituting grey hydrogen with green hydrogen, the project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 110,000 tonnes and support the development of low-carbon fuels like SAF and HVO.

Strategic Importance

This initiative enhances ZILS' role as a strategic hub for energy transition, contributing to industrial decarbonisation and renewable energy development in Portugal and Europe.
