Investment and Project Overview
Exolum is set to invest €70 million in constructing a new fuel storage and distribution terminal at Düsseldorf Airport, Germany's fourth largest. The project aims to enhance the airport's fuel supply infrastructure, supporting the transition to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and reducing CO₂ emissions.
Timeline and Capacity
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with operations expected to start in the second quarter of 2028. The new terminal will replace two existing storage plants, increasing capacity by 41% to 9,000 m³, thereby improving supply security and enabling greater use of SAF and sulphur-free kerosene.
Environmental Impact and Logistics
The terminal will be connected to the railway network by the end of 2029, allowing most fuel to be transported by train instead of road. This shift will reduce CO₂ emissions, alleviate road network congestion, and enhance the efficiency of supply, loading, and unloading operations. The railway connection will also enable sourcing from more distant refineries, such as SAF production plants in Rotterdam.
Contract and Operation
Exolum has secured a 20-year contract, extendable to 25 years, for the construction, operation, connection, and maintenance of the terminal. After the contract period, the infrastructure will become the property of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH, the airport's public operator.
