Exolum Invests €70M in Sustainable Fuel Terminal at Düsseldorf Airport

Key highlights
  • Exolum will invest €70 million in a new fuel terminal at Düsseldorf Airport, starting construction in Q3 2026.
  • The facility will increase storage capacity by 41% to 9,000 m³ and support sustainable aviation fuels and sulphur-free kerosene.
  • Operations are set to begin in Q2 2028, with rail connections reducing road transport by the end of 2029.

Project Overview

Exolum has secured a contract to build, operate, connect, and maintain a new fuel storage and distribution terminal at Düsseldorf Airport, Germany. The project involves a €70 million investment, with construction slated to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

Facility Details

The new terminal will replace two existing storage plants, increasing capacity by 41% to 9,000 m³. This expansion will enhance supply security and facilitate the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and sulphur-free kerosene.

Operational Timeline

The terminal is expected to commence operations in the second quarter of 2028. By the end of 2029, it will be connected to the railway network, shifting most fuel transport from road to rail, which is more environmentally friendly.

Environmental Impact

The rail connection will allow fuel to be sourced from distant refineries, such as SAF production plants in Rotterdam, reducing CO₂ emissions and easing road network congestion. This shift will also improve efficiency in supply, loading, and unloading operations.
