Introduction
The European Commission has launched the Critical Chemicals Alliance, a key initiative from the Chemicals Action Plan adopted in July 2025. This Alliance aims to enhance the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of Europe's chemical industry.
Objectives
The Alliance addresses challenges such as plant closures, trade disruptions, and the need for investment in critical production capacities. It will establish criteria to identify essential chemical productions and molecules for the EU economy and strategic sectors.
Key Activities
Among its initial tasks, the Alliance will map critical molecules to improve trade monitoring and early-warning functions through the EU Customs Surveillance System. It will also support coordinated investments by aligning EU and national funding tools, assisting Member States and industry in targeting key projects.
Membership and Governance
The Alliance is open to all organizations active in the chemical industry, including companies, associations, investors, research bodies, and civil society. Interested parties can apply online by signing the Alliance's Declaration, committing to its objectives. Members can participate in the General Assembly, which meets at least twice a year to set priorities and adopt opinions and recommendations. A Steering Board will coordinate the Alliance's work, while expert working groups will focus on specific areas like trade resilience, innovation, and sustainable production.
