Enel Green Power RSA commissions 330 MW Impofu wind cluster with Sasol and Air Liquide PPAs
- 330 MW Impofu Wind Cluster comprises three 110 MW projects (North, East, West).
- Impofu North began construction in 2024; Impofu East and West reached commercial operation in May and June respectively.
- A 116 km, 132 kV overhead line — the largest privately built in South Africa — was constructed to enable wheeling.
- Three long-term PPAs supply renewable energy to Sasol’s Secunda site, where Air Liquide operates a large oxygen production facility.
Project
Enel Green Power RSA has brought the 330 MW Impofu Wind Farm cluster in the Eastern Cape to commercial operation. The cluster comprises three 110 MW projects: Impofu North, Impofu East and Impofu West; Impofu North’s construction began in 2024, with East and West entering operation in May and June respectively.
Transmission and wheeling
The development included construction of a 116 km, 132 kV high‑voltage overhead line, described as the largest privately built powerline in South Africa. That line enables energy to be transported under a wheeling framework agreement, allowing a private generator to deliver power across a third‑party network to customers.
Off‑take and industrial use
The cluster is supported by three long‑term power purchase agreements with Sasol South Africa and Air Liquide South Africa. Each operational facility supplies renewable energy to Sasol’s Secunda site in Mpumalanga, where Air Liquide operates an oxygen production facility said to be the largest of its kind globally.
Local impact and market position
The project includes local economic and socio‑economic investments and a locally based Stakeholder Relationship Manager to coordinate with municipal and community structures, aiming to build skills and employment. The cluster places Enel Green Power RSA among the first independent power producers to close large‑scale wind PPAs in South Africa’s commercial and industrial market.
