Investment and Job Creation
Covestro has invested 200 million euros in a new chlorine production plant in Tarragona, Spain, creating 50 new jobs. This facility is designed to ensure a stable supply of chlorine and caustic soda for MDI production.
Innovative ODC Technology
The plant is the first industrial-scale facility to use oxygen depolarized cathode (ODC) technology, developed in collaboration with thyssenkrupp nucera. This technology reduces energy consumption by up to 25% compared to conventional chlor-alkali electrolysis.
Environmental Impact
By using ODC technology, the plant is expected to cut CO2 emissions by up to 22,000 metric tons annually, contributing to Covestro’s goal of becoming operationally climate-neutral by 2035.
Production and Market Impact
The chlorine produced at the plant will be used on-site for MDI production, a key component in rigid polyurethane foams for insulation. The plant will also supply caustic soda to the Iberian and European markets, supporting various strategic sectors.
