Investment and Construction
Covestro is investing around EUR 200 million in its Tarragona site to boost competitiveness. A key part of this investment is the construction of a new chlorine production plant, scheduled to begin in the first half of 2019.
Innovative Technology
The new plant will utilize oxygen-depolarized cathode (ODC) technology, which consumes approximately 25% less energy than traditional methods. This technology, developed in collaboration with Thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers, replaces the hydrogen-generating electrode with an oxygen-depolarized cathode, reducing the required voltage from three volts to around two.
Environmental Impact
By adopting ODC technology, the new plant will significantly cut CO2 emissions, reducing them by about 22,000 metric tons annually. This reduction is equivalent to the emissions produced by 15,000 cars each year.
Chlorine Production
Chlorine, essential for producing around two-thirds of all polymers, is a critical component in manufacturing MDI, a precursor for rigid foam. Rigid foam is widely used for insulation in buildings and refrigerators, contributing to energy efficiency and lower power consumption.
