Concrete Chemicals secures €350M for Germany's largest e-SAF plant

Key highlights
  • Concrete Chemicals received €350 million for an e-SAF plant in Schwedt, Germany.
  • The plant will produce over 37,000 tonnes of e-SAF and e-naphtha annually.
  • Production aims to cut at least 100,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂ emissions per year.
  • Final investment decision is targeted by 2027, with production supporting 2030 mandates.

Funding and Project Overview

Concrete Chemicals GmbH has secured €350 million in public funding to establish Germany's largest industrial-scale Electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuels (e-SAF) production facility in Schwedt. The funding, approved at national and regional levels, is under the Climate Energy and Environmental Aid Guidelines (CEEAG) framework, aimed at advancing a clean hydrogen economy and enhancing EU energy sovereignty.

Production and Environmental Impact

The facility will produce over 37,000 tonnes of synthetic kerosene and e-naphtha annually, using biogenic CO₂ and renewable hydrogen through a Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process. This is expected to reduce at least 100,000 tonnes of fossil CO₂ emissions per year in the aviation industry. The CO₂ will be sourced locally in cooperation with LEIPA Leinfelder GmbH.

Strategic Importance and Timelines

This project is a significant step towards decarbonizing European aviation and aligns with Germany's hydrogen infrastructure plans and the IPCEI hydrogen framework. It supports the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation blending mandates and contributes to regional economic development. The technical planning phase begins immediately, with a final investment decision expected by 2027 and production to support 2030 mandates.
