EU Climate Targets

The EU has set ambitious climate targets ahead of COP30, aiming to reduce net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 66.25-72.5% below 1990 levels by 2035. This target covers all sectors and GHGs, marking a significant step towards climate neutrality by 2050.

2040 Climate Target

Member States have agreed on a legally binding 2040 target of a 90% reduction, with 85% to be achieved domestically and up to 5% through international carbon credits. The proposal is currently under negotiation with the European Parliament.

Pathway to 2040

The Commission has outlined a pragmatic and flexible pathway to achieve the 2040 target, considering current economic, security, and geopolitical realities. This approach aims to provide predictability for investors and businesses, supporting the EU's clean transition and industrial competitiveness.

Commitment to Paris Agreement

The EU's new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This move reinforces the EU's commitment to achieving the Paris Agreement goals and collaborating with global partners to reduce GHG emissions.
