TotalEnergies to Build Plastic Recycling Unit in France

At a glance
  • The new recycling unit will produce 30,000 tons of recycled plastic annually by 2026.
  • The Grandpuits project involves over €500 million investment in low-carbon energy and circular economy.
  • The biorefinery will produce 285,000 tons of SAF annually by 2027.
  • The biomethane unit will prevent 20,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.

New Plastic Recycling Unit

TotalEnergies is building a new mechanical recycling unit for plastic waste at its Grandpuits site, southeast of Paris. The unit will produce 30,000 tons of high value-added compounds annually by 2026, containing up to 50% recycled plastic material. A technical assistance center will also be established to support customers and develop new products.

Expansion of Recycled Polymer Offering

Following a recent investment in a high-performance recycled polypropylene production line for the automotive sector at Carling, the new Grandpuits unit will target high-performance packaging markets, particularly for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Grandpuits Zero-Crude Platform

Launched in September 2020, the Grandpuits zero-crude project aims to convert the industrial site into a hub for low-carbon energy and the circular economy. The project, with an estimated cost of over €500 million, includes several initiatives in biomass, renewables, and recycling.

Key Initiatives

The biorefinery will produce 285,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually by 2027, aligning with EU blending mandates. A biomethane unit will prevent 20,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year, with an annual capacity of 80 GWh. Additionally, Grandpuits will feature two recycling units: one for advanced recycling with a capacity of 15,000 tons annually, and the new mechanical recycling unit.

Green Electricity Generation

Grandpuits hosts the largest solar farm in the Île-de-France region, generating 31 GWh of green electricity annually since July 2023, enough to supply 19,000 people. This complements a 28 GWh facility launched in 2022 at Gargenville, west of Paris.
