Chlorum Solutions USA is developing its first U.S. chlor-alkali plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, with an investment of over $70 million. The facility follows a small-scale, decentralized model intended to reduce transport of liquefied chlorine and strengthen regional supply chains.

Technology and products

The plant will use membrane technology rather than older mercury or diaphragm processes. It will not compress, liquefy or store chlorine gas and will produce sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda directly from salt for customers within Arizona.

Supply-chain impact

The project is positioned to add redundancy to U.S. chlor-alkali capacity, which is currently concentrated on the Gulf Coast, and to reduce reliance on long-haul shipments of inhalation-hazard chlorine gas used by downstream users including water treatment.

Local economic effects and partnerships

Chlorum expects the facility to create permanent roles for engineers, operators and administrative staff, support contractors during construction, and collaborate with local workforce training initiatives. The company will bring its Arizona-based products to market in partnership with distributor Univar Solutions.
