Leadership Transition

As of 1 June 2025, CEO Cas König will leave Groningen Seaports to become the CEO of North Sea Port, a cross-border port authority spanning over sixty kilometers from Ghent in Belgium to Terneuzen and Vlissingen. König has served as CEO of Groningen Seaports since 1 September 2017.

Achievements and Impact

During König's tenure, significant developments occurred in the ports of Delfzijl and Eemshaven, contributing to regional prosperity. Notably, a floating LNG terminal was established in just six months following the onset of the war in Ukraine, reducing Europe's dependency on Russian gas imports. This development underscores the crucial role of the ports amid current geopolitical instability.

Future Prospects

König expressed gratitude for his time at Groningen Seaports and looks forward to the challenges at North Sea Port, which operates in two countries and is larger than Groningen Seaports. He believes that with the right investments and opportunities, the ports can offer long-term prosperity to the Groningen region.

Interim Leadership

The Supervisory Board of Groningen Seaports will search for a new CEO, with CFO Harold Sanders leading the port authority in the interim. The new CEO will be proposed to the Gemeenschappelijke Regeling, the joint arrangement port authority and sole shareholder of Groningen Seaports.
