JFE Steel, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical launch Mizushima carbon-recycling demonstration
- Demonstration started in September 2026 at the Mizushima Complex in Kurashiki, Okayama.
- JFE Steel supplies by-product gas from its steelmaking processes for the project.
- Mitsubishi Gas Chemical produces methanol at a new Carbopath™ demonstration plant using the supplied gas.
- Mitsubishi Chemical produces propylene from that methanol at an existing demonstration facility using the DTP® process.
Project start and objective
JFE Steel, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Mitsubishi Chemical began a supply-chain demonstration project in September 2026 at the Mizushima Complex in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. The project follows a demonstration plan announced by the three companies in March 2025 and aims to advance a carbon-recycling society.
Process flow and facilities
JFE Steel is supplying by-product gas from its steelmaking processes for the demonstration. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical is producing methanol from that gas at a newly constructed Carbopath™ demonstration plant within its Mizushima Plant; Carbopath™ is described as a carbon recycling platform utilizing methanol. Mitsubishi Chemical is producing propylene from the methanol at its existing demonstration facility using the DTP® (Dominant Technology for Propylene) process.
Evaluation and next steps
The three companies will continue the demonstration to evaluate economic viability, identify challenges and determine pathways toward commercialization. They will also explore broader collaboration opportunities with other businesses within the Mizushima Complex.
