About METI

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is a central government ministry of Japan responsible for economic, industrial, trade, and energy policy. METI designs and implements measures to enhance industrial competitiveness and innovation, administers industrial standards (including JIS), oversees export and import controls, and coordinates energy strategy and resource security through affiliated agencies such as the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy and NEDO.

In the context of the chemical and materials industries, METI co-administers key regulatory frameworks including the Chemical Substances Control Law (with the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) and Japan’s Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) system. The ministry also manages industrial safety regulations (e.g., high-pressure gas), promotes decarbonization and circular economy initiatives, and supports R&D, digitalization, and advanced manufacturing through policy programs and funding. METI engages internationally on trade rules, standards, and technology cooperation, working with industry and academia to strengthen supply chain resilience and sustainable growth across Japan’s chemical and broader manufacturing sectors.
