- Construction starts in 2024, operational by mid-2025
- Uses Borcycle™ M technology for recycling
- Processes polypropylene and high-density polyethylene waste
- Expands recyclate processing and compounding capacity
Project Overview
Borealis is set to install a semi-commercial demonstration recyclate-based polyolefins (rPO) compounding line in Beringen, Belgium. Construction is scheduled for 2024, with full operational status expected in the first half of 2025.
Technology and Capabilities
The new line will utilize Borealis' proprietary Borcycle™ M technology to convert mechanically recycled post-consumer waste into high-quality rigid polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) materials. It will process a wide range of recyclate flakes from both PP and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) waste sources, offering significant versatility and flexibility.
Application and Impact
As a semi-commercial demonstration line, it will highlight the effectiveness of Borcycle M technology in producing mechanically recycled solutions that meet the stringent demands of high-performance applications across various industries, including mobility, consumer products, appliances, and energy. This will enable Borealis' customers to incorporate value-added recycled plastics into their products without sacrificing performance.
Strategic Importance
The investment will enhance Borealis' overall recyclate processing and compounding capacity, providing crucial operational experience and technological insights. This knowledge will be essential for scaling up the transformative recycling technology. The initiative aligns with Borealis' broader strategy to accelerate the transition to a circular economy for plastics.
